General Note:

We normally rehearse on Wednesday evenings during term time, starting 7:15pm and ending at 9:15pm with a short tea break (please arrive in good time so we are ready to start promptly).

Normal venue is Wormstall Hall, St Bartholomew's School (see map in 'how to find us'), but the schedule below gives exceptions. Changes are sometimes notified to us quite late, so please check on website before coming to a rehearsal.

Newbury Symphony Orchestra

One of the oldest non-professional orchestras in England, the Newbury Symphony Orchestra is now enjoying its 130th season. NSO comprises sixty to seventy enthusiastic amateur musicians and draws its members and audience from four counties. Our resident professional conductor is Chris Dawe and our professional leader is Mike Jones.

A major objective of NSO is to encourage young and up-and-coming soloists by inviting them to perform concertos. Such is the reputation of the NSO that there is no shortage of applicants to conduct and play with us. The orchestra owes much to Adrian Brown who conducted the orchestra for twenty-three years. Soloists John Lill and Barry Tuckwell have gone on to achieve international acclaim after performing with the Newbury Symphony Orchestra. Recent popular soloists have been Lucy Jeal, violin and Daniel Grimwood, piano and Lawrence Power, Viola..

The orchestra continues to make a vital and valuable contribution to the cultural environment of Newbury and locality. In addition to performing two major concerts a year, it regularly takes part in the Newbury Spring Festival, one of the major Arts festivals in the country. Another regular commitment is to the Hungerford and District Community Arts Festival.

New players are always welcome, and there are opportunities in every section for enthusiastic amateur musicians. At present we especially need double basses.

The Newbury Symphony Orchestra is affiliated to Making Music, which represents and supports amateur performing societies throughout the UK.

Since its foundation in 1879 the orchestra has had a proud history of enriching the cultural life of Newbury and its environs, some of which is recounted here.

There are two rehearsal venues that the orchestra regularly uses.

Please check the rehearsal schedule to find out which venue we are rehearsing at each week.

By Rail: Get off the train at the main Newbury Railway Station (note be careful not to get off at the "Newbury Racecourse" railway station).

The rehearsal venues are within 10 minutes walking distance from the railway station. Please see map below.

Walk down Station Road, and then Pound Street. Turn left into Buckingham Road.

Newbury Symphony Orchestra welcomes a familiar face to local audiences when soprano Janet Coxwell appears with the orchestra to perform the ‘Four Last Songs’ by Richard Strauss.

Janet Coxwell is busy both as a solo artist and choral singer. She has sung with the internationally renowned vocal group The Tallis Scholars since 1991 and she has recently returned from Australia where she directed the Tallis Summer School. Janet Coxwell is a founder/director of the Newbury Chamber Choir,
The Cecilia Consort. She directed their sell-out performance of the Monteverdi Vespers in Douai Abbey last October and she also conducted Newbury Choral Society in its pre-Christmas Concert in St Nicolas’ Church.

In the NSO Concert on Saturday 21 March, Janet Coxwell will sing the expressive and intense songs that were given their first performance in a Prom Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1950. All the other works in this concert originate from earlier in the twentieth century. Stravinsky’s magical folk tale ballet, The Firebird and Debussy’s sumptuous Prelude a L’Apres-Midi d’un Faune achieved fame when performed as ballets in Europe by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Ravel’s short Pavane pour une Infante Defunte completes the attractive programme. Tickets for this concert in St Nicolas’ church can be purchased in advance from Philip Brown Violins 85a Northbrook Street or bought on the door.

New playing members of all ages are always welcome. At present we are especially short of double basses.

Contact the secretary or chairman and come along to a rehearsal to try us out. As a guideline, we suggest that players should play to a standard of Associated Board grade 7 or above, and section leaders would need to be much better than this.

Christopher Dawe started his career as a chorister at Durham Cathedral and studied composition at St John’s College Cambridge with Robin Holloway. He studied conducting at Trinity College of Music. In 1995 he formed the Anton Bruckner Choir, one of the most highly regarded choirs in London, and the Anton Bruckner Orchestra. In 1997 he was appointed interim conduction of Imperial College Choir.

His conducting career has taken him abroad and from 1999 to 2000 he acted as Assistant Conductor of the internationally acclaimed Budapest Festival Orchestra under Ivan Fischer.

On returning to Britain he assisted Mark Elder at the Halle Orchestra and conducted the Meltdown Ensemble in a televised appearance for the 50th anniversary of the Royal Festival Hall. In 2001 he was appointed conductor of the Grange Choral Society, Bournemouth and in 2002 was appointed conductor of Morley Chamber Orchestra. He has been Music Director of Dorking Camerata since 2003. The Newbury Symphony orchestra selected him as Chief Conductor in 2004.

The orchestra was pleased to welcome Edmund 'Mike' Jones as our leader in 2006. He started his performing career as violinist with the Northern Sinfonia and later the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra. Subsequently he was appointed leader of the West Riding String Quartet resident at the University of Leeds. Edmund has supplemented this with many solo performances, from a Wigmore Hall recital in their young musicians’ series to performances of much of the violin concerto repertoire with orchestras in the North of England. He now lives in Blewbury and has taught for Berkshire Maestros.
